Limited Eligibility
Limited eligibility for email service will be offered upon application to alumni, parents of enrolled students, Friends of Tufts, the Trustees of Tufts and Tufts Overseers in accordance with the University's Responsible Use Policy.
Other individuals may request limited services to other information technology services with authorization from a sponsoring faculty or department such as visiting scholars, consultants performing work for Tufts, and Conference Bureau registrants. This authorization must be in accordance with policies and other restrictions as defined by the administrating unit of the service.
What Information Technology Services are available at Tufts?
Core Information Technology Services
Core information technology services include a limited amount of disk storage and user accounts as needed for the service required. Core information technology services include but are not limited to:
- Email services including directory, listprocs, and news groups
- Web page authoring and storage
- Standard Internet services including Web, Telnet, and FTP
- Use of computer labs (these are run by the schools within Tufts and are subject to policies set by the administering unit).
- Use of licensed software packages and databases.
- Electronic library services including access to databases and resources restricted to the Tufts community (subject to the policies of each of the Tufts libraries, database license terms, and copyright laws).
- Access from off campus to Tufts IT services
Specialized Information Technology Services
Specialized information technology services are available to anyone in the Tufts community who has demonstrated need for the service. Some services may only be made available to those who are authorized due to the nature of their work. All of these services require separate application to the system administrator and may require signed authorization from a department head or chair.
- Academic and research systems and databases such as SAS and Human Genome System.
- Shell access to host machines
- Administrative systems such as Student Information System, Human Resources System, etc.
- Library systems for database maintenance purposes.
Implementation and Revisions
University Information Technology (UIT) is responsible for implementation and enforcement of this policy. The Information Technology Council (ITC) will oversee necessary updates and changes to this policy, usually by assignment to the ITC Academic Affairs Subcommittee or the ITC Ad Hoc Policy Oversight Committee. Proposed changes will be developed by the ITC and/or its designated committee(s) in consultation with UIT and authorized representatives of the affected constituencies including as appropriate: Development, Student Deans and Faculty Deans in each school, University Library Counsel, General Counsel, Human Resources, and the Assistant Provost. The Provost has authority to arbitrate disagreements on policy changes and has final authority to approve changes, except that the Executive Vice President must approve changes in eligibility that affects administrative personnel.
