Connecting to the Internet

Connecting On Campus

Members of the Tufts community can access the Internet in one or more of the following ways. Please click on the appropriate links below for more information.

Connections from:

  • An on campus office or department - contact your FSP

  • A computer lab

  • A Medford campus student housing facility - please contact Tufts Online.

If you read news and/or email from more than one location, some settings may not "transport" easily from one mail or newsreader to another. For instance, you may read e-mail using Thunderbird from your office and Outlook Express from home. If you decide to download your messages in Outlook Express, you may not then be able to read them in Thunderbird at your office.

Likewise, if you've customized your home web browser to remember certain bookmarked sites or to default to a specific home page, your dorm or office browser will not recognize these preferences.

Please consult the documentation for such programs for advice on compatibility.

Connecting Off Campus

Computer access to Tufts from off-campus requires faculty, staff and students to subscribe to a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP). Internet Service Provider options include standard modem dial-up, digital subscriber line service (DSL) and cable access. In Massachusetts, the availability of these services depends on where you live. Providers can be located by area code at The List.

With an ISP connection, email access is available to everyone via the Thunderbird client for Trumpeter or IMP Webmail. In addition, use of the Tufts VPN (Virtual Private Networking) client provides access to the Tufts domain network drives from off campus.
