Important Changes to Emerald

On October 1st, 2008, the Emerald server was updated to provide for a more robust, secure, and convenient computing platform. The new server, whose domain name is emerald.uit.tufts.edu, uses LDAP authentication to seamlessly integrate your UTLN and Trumpeter email/Webmail password for Emerald server access. In addition, the exclusive use of SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) facilitates increased security for you, your data, and the Tufts network.

NOTE: New account requests for Emerald are restricted to those who need to support a pre-existing web site. See Web Hosting for a list of other personal and departmental web site options.

New Connection Information (valid on or after Oct. 1, 2008)

There are just a few simple steps you need to take to prepare for the change:

Replace any FTP-only file transfer software with an SFTP-capable application.

Older file transfer applications that do not include an option to select SSH as the transfer protocol will no longer work. Affected applications include WS_FTP and versions of Dreamweaver older than MX 2004. There are several free open-source options, including FileZilla, Cyberduck, and WinSCP.

Update the domain name from emerald.tufts.edu to emerald.uit.tufts.edu in your file transfer and web editing software.

Any software that you currently use to connect to Emerald will need to have the host or remote server settings updated from emerald.tufts.edu to emerald.uit.tufts.edu. Examples of affected applications include SecureCRT, Dreamweaver 8.0, WinSCP.

Remember to use your Universal Tufts Login Name (UTLN) and LDAP (Trumpeter email/Webmail) password to log on to Emerald.

This is an easy one. If you are unsure of your UTLN or LDAP password, contact your FSP or call the UIT Support Center at (617) 627-3376.

Outlook/Exchange Users:
If you use Outlook and connect to an Exchange server, your email password is different from your LDAP account. Contact your FSP or IT Support organization if you need help in determining your LDAP password.

If you have any compatability concerns or questions about a specific application, contact the UIT Support Center at uitsc@tufts.edu or call (617) 627-3376.
