Overview | Upgrade FAQ | Account Rules | Space | Software | Access | UNIX | Web Hosting

What is Emerald?

Emerald is primarily a communications server which provides user Web pages, text-based access to Usenet news, and shell services for terminal-oriented and network clients.

UNIX

The operating system Emerald runs is called UNIX. Besides the above programs, there are a few UNIX commands you should be familiar with. Click here to read more about basic UNIX commands.

How do I apply for an account on Emerald?

Accounts on Emerald are available for all registered students, faculty, and staff at Tufts University. To obtain an account:

  • Medford campus:
Contact the University IT Support Center at x7-3376 or by email at uitsc@tufts.edu for further assistance.

  • Boston campus:
Present your Tufts ID during normal business hours at the Health Sciences Library 5th floor Learning Resources Center Helpdesk.

  • Grafton campus:
Present your Tufts ID at the Veterinary Library during normal business hours.

Rules of Use

UIT trusts and expects that all users of Emerald use the resource responsibly. For this reason, we impose few rules. However, please keep in mind that:

  1. You are required to adhere to the Responsible Use Policy, which you signed when you established your account.

  2. You are responsible for everything done with your account. Never share your account or reveal your password to anyone, including UIT staff. UIT staff will never need to know your password.

  3. Emerald is not a toy, nor is it a place to "explore." Emerald exists to serve the communications needs of the Tufts community. If you want to explore, or to learn more about how UNIX works, we encourage you to take a computer science class or set up your own Linux box.
