Bounced Message Documentation

These error messages indicate that your message was unable to be delivered to one or more of the original recipients. Each of the common errors are listed below to help you determine the cause of the error.

Illegal Attachment

Example:

Original address:user@host.tufts.edu
Recipient address: user@host.com
A message that you sent could not be delivered to all of its recipients.
The following address(es) failed:
user@host.com
SMTP error from remote mailer after end of data:
host host.domain.com [64.233.171.27]: 552 Illegal Attachment

Unknown user, or Unknown or illegal alias

Example:

user@host.tufts.edu
SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO::
host host.tufts.edu [130.64.123.123]: 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias:
user@host.tufts.edu

The listed address is not a valid email address; the address does not exist or was spelled incorrectly. Please check your spelling, or search the Tufts on-line directory at http://directory.tufts.edu/ for the users correct email address.

Over quota, or Disk quota exceeded

Example:

Recipient address: user@ims-ms-daemon
Original address: user@host.tufts.edu
Reason: Over quota

This error means that the recipient is temporarily unable to receive email because their email inbox is full. If the message is urgent, you should attempt to contact the recipient by other means. If the message is not urgent, resend the message at a later time.

Unrouteable address

Example:

user@host.com
Unrouteable address

The listed address is not valid. This error usually occurs when the address contains an invalid domain name, which the mail servers are unable to route. Please verify that the address is correct and resend the message.

Relay not permitted

The host refused to relay mail to a third party. Generally, this means that you are attempting to use the Tufts mail relays from off campus, and sending to a non-Tufts email address. To do so requires you to authenticate first.

Please see the TLS/Auth section below for more information regarding authenticating.

Relay Upgrade

TLS/Auth

Users will now be able to use the Tufts mail relays from offsite, providing that they setup their email client to do so. The first thing users must do is to enable SSL/TLS (using an encrypted connection) in their email client. The relays will NOT allow AUTH attempts without a secure connection (SSL/TLS). Once SSL/TLS is enabled, users need to configure their email client with a username/password (UTLN / Trumpeter password) for the outgoing mail server.
