In an effort to meet the standards of a growing number of Internet service and mobile wireless providers, UIT has made authenticated SMTP mail possible on port 587 and 465 for Trumpeter email users. This will help alleviate some of the problems our users have experienced when attempting to send email from outside the university or from laptops not on the Tufts network to hosts that require both encryption and authentication.
Although Trumpeter email users operating outside the Tufts network may still use port 25, for more consistent results, UIT recommends switching to a mail submission port. As ports 587 and 465 are also supported on campus, we recommend that mobile laptop users make the change for a consistent experience both on and off campus. Future versions of the Trumpeter custom clients will be configured to use mail submission ports.
Please note that encryption and authentication are both required for successful use, which means that users will have to enter their passwords twice: once before reading email and once before sending it. We have created documentation detailing the process of changing the configuration for several mail clients including Thunderbird, Outlook and Outlook Express, Eudora, Entourage, and Mail.app. You do not have to be a local administrator to make the changes yourself; however, you may wish to consult your FSP for assistance or further explanation.
