Changing Your Tufts LAN Password

The Tufts LAN requires a password change every 180 days. Starting 14 days before your current password expires, you'll receive daily email notification that will give you the option to change your current password. In addition, Windows users connected to the Tufts LAN will also receive a pop-up notification for 14 days prior to password expiration during their network login that will give them the option to change their current password.

Smart computing practices suggest that you don't procrastinate and take advantage of the convenient opportunity to change your password before the final day.

Changing Your LAN Password - Windows Users

NOTE:
  • In addition to your Tufts domain (LAN) account, Windows computers also have Local Machine and Administrator accounts. These are not the same as your LAN account and are not subject to the 180 day password expiration. If you are at all confused about which password you are changing (Tufts Domain or Local Machine), consult your FSP or local IT Support personnel before proceeding.
Always consult your IT Support organization or FSP before attempting to change Windows-specific machine account passwords.

  • To ensure the safest possible computing environment for all of its faculty, staff, and students, Tufts policy requires the use of strong, complex passwords. New passwords that do not comply with these requirements will be rejected during the LAN password change process. Therefore, you may wish to review the complex password requirements before you begin.

  1. Click the Start button and select Tufts Services > Change Password. The Change Password dialog box will open.

  2. Enter your old password and type a new password (twice, to confirm), in the spaces provided.
Remember that passwords are case sensitive.

    Click OK.

  3. If your new password meets the complex requirement criteria, you'll see a Password changed successfully confirmation. If the password requirements have not been met, the applicable rule(s) your new password does not comply with will display. Adjust your new password to comply with the requirements, re-enter it, and click OK.

Windows users may also use the online Password Reset Form. For more information, see the description below for Mac users.

Changing Your LAN Password - Mac, WebVPN, and Tufts VPN Users

Mac users who map or "mount" their P: or Q:/R: drives do not use the LAN login scripts. For this reason, they do not have access to the Tufts Services menu or the 14 day pop-up notification link to reset their LAN password. Mac users, as well as faculty members who use WebVPN or Tufts VPN exclusively to access their network drives, can either use the online Password Change Form or contact their departmental IT Support organization for a password reset.

Using the Online Password Change Form

  1. Ensure that you have an active Interent connection and browse to https://outlook.web.tufts.edu/iisadmpwd/tuftsPasswordCng.htr.

  2. The Tufts complex password requirements are listed to the right of the form to help you create passwords that comply with Tufts' password standards. You should review them before you proceed.

  3. When you've read the requirements, add your UTLN after tufts in the Account field. Do not delete tufts or your password reset will fail.

Type your old, or current, password in the Old password field.

Type your new password twice; the first time to set the new password, the second time to confirm it.

  4. Click Submit.

Emerald
Access to Emerald is through the LDAP directory, which is the same service that authenticates your Tufts Trumpeter email or Webmail access. To login to Emerald, use your UTLN and Trumpeter/Webmail password. Please note that this is not the same system that authenticates Exchange email. If you are an Exchange email user and are not sure of your LDAP password, contact your IT support organization, your FSP, or the UIT Support Center at uitsc@tufts.edu .
