About Us - Networking and Telecommunications

Providing services to all three campuses, Networking and Telecommunications keeps Tufts faculty, staff and students connected to each other and the outside world by designing, maintaining, and supporting the network, data, and voice communication infrastructure that we’ve all come to rely on in this digital age.

  • Network Engineering (NOC)
The Network Engineering Group (NOC) designs, maintains, and operates the university-wide data network, Tufts faculty, staff, and students connected to both each other and the outside world. Services include maintenance of the following:

    • TUNIS (Tufts University Network Interface Sign-up) DHCP Self-Registration Tool
    • The Cardinal Network Database System (DNS, IP, and DHCP databases)
    • Tufts DNS (name resolution) servers
    • Load balancing services for data center customers
    • Internet2 access
    • Time servers
    • Tufts wireless infrastructure

Additional responsibilities include monitoring the network, particularly network traffic and router status. To learn more about NOC services and resources, visit http://www.net.tufts.edu/.

  • Data Communications Services
The Data Communications team consists of Datacom Service Technicians, who are certified cabling and splicing technicians, and Datacom/Telecom Project Managers, who oversee the design and specifications of all Tufts cabling projects. Together, they service the Medford, Boston, and Grafton campuses. The list of services they provide includes:

    • Maintaining and enhancing the copper and fiber cabling infrastructures for Tufts' computer, telephone, and cable TV (CATV) networks
    • Pulling and terminating cables
    • Installing network switches, wireless equipment, and telecommunications jacks
    • Maintaining the telecommunications rooms
    • Identifying underground cable locations for Dig Safe
    • Providing support for all data, telephone and cable TV (CATV) requests from Tufts students, staff and faculty
    • Provide after hours on-call coverage for any network event

For more information, visit the Data Communications website at http://uit.tufts.edu/datacomservices/ .

  • Voice Communications Services
Voice Services plays an important part in campus-wide communication by providing integrated telephone, voicemail, and telecommunications support to Tufts faculty and staff. Telephone services include work orders and the Telephone Repair Help Desk; a user guide; equipment price lists; billing; and telephone jack installation and repair. Along with complete voicemail services, they support a large list of emergency telephones located across the Medford campus, disability services, and conference room format videoconferencing.

Voice Services also provides students with general dialing instruction, voicemail support, and access
to the Telephone Repair Help Desk.
