Institutional Purchases for Faculty and Staff

Individual License vs. Group License
Faculty and staff acquiring stand-alone Matlab software for installation on a desktop or laptop can purchase an Individual License or a license that becomes part of the university’s Group License. In either case, the license can be covered under software maintenance. Under an Individual License, the purchaser is responsible for any annual maintenance costs (upgrade and support). If the purchaser opts to participate in the Group License managed by UIT, UIT’s Site License Program will cover the annual maintenance costs (upgrade and support) for the software.
Obtaining the Software
Volume Purchase
If UIT receives a significant number of requests for Matlab software, UIT will initiate and coordinate a volume purchase of Matlab software licenses as a way to reduce the cost of a stand-alone license. In general, volume purchases of MATLAB are announced via a postservice message sent to all faculty and staff. Volume purchases of Matlab occur only when there is sufficient demand; therefore, faculty and staff members interested in obtaining a Matlab license outside of a volume purchase should contact Debbi Cohen at the Mathworks at 508-647-7057 or debbi.cohen@mathworks.com to acquire the software.
Individual Purchases
To acquire a license, contact Debbi Cohen at the Mathworks at 508-647-7057 or debbi.cohen@mathworks.com and get a quote for the desired software.
If the purchaser wishes to become part of the university’s Group License, the purchaser should:
- Notify the Mathworks and the Site License Program (site-lic@tufts.edu ) that the software being purchased is to become part of the university’s Group License.
- Purchase the license(s) from the Mathworks.
- Purchase enough software maintenance coverage so that the first year’s coverage will co-terminate with the existing Group License’s software maintenance subscription, and
- Upon completion of the purchase, notify his/her local support organization to use the Mathwork’s license management application to make the software available to the purchaser.
Research Cluster

Installing Standalone Matlab Software
Group License – If the software purchase is to become part of the university’s Group License, a member of the local support organization will work with the Mathwork’s license management application to make the software available to the purchaser.
Individual License – If the software purchase is an Individual License, the Mathworks will email instructions for downloading and installing the software to the purchaser. The purchaser should contact his/her local support organization if installation assistance is required.
Software Maintenance
A Matlab software maintenance subscription provides the software user with access to software fixes and patches, technical support and new releases of the software. Good information stewardship entails the purchase of software maintenance, which entitles the purchaser to obtain security fixes, upgrades, and technical support.
Versions, Upgrades and New Releases
License holders are permitted to run the version of the software which was purchased. A license which is covered under an active maintenance subscription may be upgraded to a newer version than the one purchased for no additional fee.

Authorized Use (Subject to change at any time.)
The Mathworks software purchased under the Mathwork’s Educational Group or Individual licenses may only be used for non-commercial purposes.
The Mathworks software purchased under the Mathwork’s Educational Group or Individual licenses may be installed on both institutional and non-institutional computers. However, if the software purchased under the Group License is going to be installed on a non-institutional computer, the purchaser will require assistance from his/her local desktop support organization in order to obtain and install the software.
