Academic Technology

AT - Services - Faculty Development

Increasing awareness of issues pertaining to teaching, learning, research and technology is the focus of Academic Technology's faculty development program, which offers opportunities for Tufts faculty to hear outside experts in the field, to learn about work being done at Tufts, and to review and discuss best practices in integrating technology into their teaching and research activities.

Through the sponsorship of teaching with technology workshops, training, and publications, the faculty development program provides practical education on specific technologies and their integration into the classroom and research and promotes existing curricular technology services and resources at Tufts.

Summer Institute

The Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning with Technology focuses on technologies that support learning in the classroom. The Institute is an engaging week of seminars, discussions and hands-on technology workshops designed to enable faculty from across the university to think with colleagues about the learning objectives of their students and how technology can be used to support their educational goals.

The 2010 Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning with Technology, Innovative Course Design: Using Technology to Enhance Teaching and to Facilitate Learning will be held Tuesday, May 18 - Friday, May 21 on the Medford campus. The 2010 Institute will focus on a model for designing innovative courses through the use of technology. Participants will be introduced to a new environment for designing and creating learning sequences online and will work in teams on creating integrative course designs through a multi-step process of defining instructional goals, aligning feedback and assessment mechanisms, identifying related teaching and learning activities, and selecting appropriate technologies to support their designs.

University-Wide Teaching Conference

The University Conference on Teaching and Learning is an annual, university-wide conference that is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the University Committee on Teaching and Faculty Development (UCTFD) whose role is to assist the provost in affirming excellent teaching as a priority at Tufts. Each year the committee selects a conference theme based on current issues that are of importance to Tufts faculty.

The 23rd University Conference on Teaching and Learning will be held on Friday, December 11, 2009 from 8:30 am - 2:45 pm on the Boston campus.  This year's program is entitled Beyond Student Evaluation: Peer to Peer Exchanges.

Health Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Mini Teaching Symposia

To address the specific teaching needs of Health Sciences and Veterinary faculty, mini teaching with technology symposia are held each year on the Boston and Grafton campuses. These are half-day workshops, combining theory and practice that focus on a particular teaching issue identified by faculty and administrators on each campus. The program includes a presentation by an expert on the topic being discussed and hands on technical skills workshops. Previous mini symposia have addressed such topics as using technology to motivate students for active learning, maximizing learning and student contact through formative assessment and technology, and evidence based medicine.

UIT Forum for Teaching, Learning, and Research

Sponsored by University Information Technology, the UIT Forum for Teaching, Learning, and Research is a monthly brown bag lunch for Tufts University faculty, staff, and students that provides an opportunity to learn about and discuss emerging technologies and related best practices in higher education.
